HISTORY OF STREET PAINTING
Street painting likely originated in Italy in the 16th century whereby ‘vagabond’ artists (known as Italian Madonnari) travelled from festival to festival painting on sidewalks and streets with pastels, chalk, charcoal or stones. Citizens passing by would toss coins into a cup as a token of appreciation. The art of street painting has experienced a resurgence in the past number of years and a 1986 documentary “Masterpieces in Chalk” features the making of a modern, world famous street artist, Kurt Wenner. Today, festivals small and large exist across the globe, frequently attracting tens of thousands of visitors, such as the fabulous Lake Worth Street Painting Festival whereby over 100,000 visitors annually enjoy the weekend extravaganza of incredible professional street artists, local artists, students, parents and kids.
HISTORY OF GRAFFITI
The Cambridge International Street Art Festival goes one step further, introducing world class graffiti artists (writers) who will create works of large scale art on the flood walls of the Grand River within the historic bridges and downtown core.
Graffiti is a more recent ‘urban’ art form which sometimes garners a bad rap but it is also recognized for it’s artistic merit. Modern graffiti is believed to have taken root in the early 1960’s in Philadelphia. The popularity of graffiti took off in the 1970’s and is now recognized globally as an art genre. Don’t be fooled by negative press… the artists participating at the festival are extremely creative and talented… this is not a form of vandalism; it is an extraordinary form of art!
HISTORY OF CELLOGRAFF ART
In short, it is a wall-free form of graffiti created by two artists from France in 2006, Astro and Kanos.
Imagine a graffiti artist creating work on a huge rolls of stretched cellophane (clear plastic) supported by whatever available supports he/she can find! That is cellograff art! You got to see it to believe it!
